What's Best - SEO or Google Ads?
They both work, and bring in targetted traffic. In an ideal world any business would want two or three spots on page one of Google – one in the Ads, one in Maps, one in the organic listings. I don’t see them as competition. It all comes down to what works best for your business right now, and where you want to be in the next 6 months. That’s why I always recommend we have a chat, that way I can give you some ideas that may help you get clear on what will be most effective for your business.
Having said that, if I had no immediate pressure and had to choose one it would be SEO traffic. SEO traffic is often called “free” traffic because you don’t pay directly for the visitors to your website. And, there are no limits to what you can rank for.
With paid traffic you are bidding on certain keywords, so you miss out on a huge amount of potential traffic. Also, you are limited by budget – once your ads budget is spent for the day you don’t get seen by anyone until the next day.
But the biggest benefit I see is that a correctly done SEO campaign will build the authority of your domain in the eyes of Google and they begin to trust you more. Your website begins to rank for many search phrases (way more than you could probably get if you were paying for ads), and you become an authority in your industry. You’ve probably seen that – certain sites keep showing up for searches in certain industries or topics. That’s authority; SEO can get you that, but paid ads never will.
An authoritative website, that is trusted by Google, is a major asset as part of your business.
How Will I Know If The SEO Is Working?
At the beginning of your SEO campaign I will spend time doing keyword research. This helps me see what terms your potential customers are typing in Google. Many of these will be obvious, but I always manage to find some “gems”. I then check and see what position your website is currently ranking for these terms on Google, and the level of competition. We agree what keywords we will be going after and those are what I work to improve your site’s visibility for.
I then add these search phrases to a rank tracking software, which monitors where your website is appearing for the terms. I keep a daily eye on this, and every Monday morning you will receive a full report showing where your website is ranking, and you will be able to see the progress.
Ultimately, however, SEO is all about getting more (and the correct type of) traffic to your website. Assuming your website is attractive to visitors, you will see an increase in telephone calls, contact form and email enquiries, and footfall (if you have that kind of business).
How Long Does SEO Take To Work?
It depends where you are currently ranking, the strength and relevance (from a Google-perspective) of your domain and website, and the level of competition you are up against. Given how individual it is that’s why I recommend getting in touch so I can do a quick audit (at no charge). This gives you a picture of where you are and what you can realistically expect, and how long it will take.
Having said that, I normally see positive movement for my clients within the first few weeks of a campaign, but typically with SEO you are taking in timeframes of months to get solid and stable rankings. But, it is totally worth it. If you can rank highly and stay there it can positively transform (and protect) your business. I have seen it many, many times over the years.
